A tragedy in the world of volleyball. The FIVB issued a statement following the deadly attack
Unfortunately, information about civilian casualties appears more and more often on social media. Last Saturday (February 28), a sports hall was shelled in the city of Lamerd, located in the southern part of Iran. Unfortunately, according to Iranian media reports, at least 18 people died as a result of this event.
Among the victims were members of the volleyball team, which were training at the time of the brutal attack.
A statement on this matter was issued by the FIVB world federation.
The FIVB is shocked and deeply concerned by reports of the deaths of several young female volleyball players in Iran as a result of the deteriorating security situation in the Middle East and the region. We express our sincere condolences to the families of the victims and everyone affected by this crisis.
Moreover, tens of thousands of members of our huge volleyball family in the region are displaced and face a very uncertain future.
FiVB is currently focused on ensuring the safety of all volleyball players, coaches, staff and volunteers living in or visiting the region who are currently involved in the conflict.
The FIVB has established a task force to accelerate humanitarian response in real time, in partnership with governments, non-governmental organizations and other relevant actors.
FIVB deeply believes in the importance of cooperation, dialogue, peace and solidarity. In line with these values, the FIVB calls on the international community to help de-escalate the conflict and seek a peaceful solution.
The Israeli side (e.g. Defense Minister Israel Kac) described Saturday’s attack in the Middle East as a pre-emptive attack, and US President Donald Trump, announcing the start of combat operations, called on the Iranian nation to rise up against the regime.
In response, Iran fired missiles and drones at Israel and other Middle Eastern countries, mainly targeting American military bases in the region.
