The hotel burst into flames, with many tourists inside

The last Sunday of December brought tragic events not only in South Korea. In the center of the Thai capital, there was a fatal fire at the Ember Hotel on the party street Khao San Road, especially popular among low-budget backpackers. The fire spread throughout the building on Sunday evening. The source was supposed to be room number 511, located on the fifth floor of a six-story building. Although the flames were finally extinguished thanks to the quick call of firefighters who broke windows to get to those trapped, three tourists lost their lives. According to Thai media, one person died on the spot and two more in hospital. Several more tourists who suffered from smoke poisoning still require hospitalization. The nationality and age of the victims have not been confirmed by the police, who are still investigating the case. The causes of the accident remain unknown. There were 75 people in the building at the time of the fire. Currently the hotel remains closed.

Concerns about New Year’s Eve in Bangkok are growing

Bangkok is expecting a huge number of tourists celebrating the New Year. The fire has therefore increased concerns about the safety of tourists during New Year’s Eve. The city expects at least 20,000 foreign guests on Khao San Road alone. “Everyone is scared now, but we shouldn’t have too much to worry about. We have over 150 police officers and district employees who will ensure security on Khao San Road,” says Sanga Ruangwattanakul, president of the association of local entrepreneurs.
