A historic moment in the Polish energy sector. Current from the Baltic Sea flowed into the power grid
The energy produced by Baltic Power – the first Polish offshore wind farm in the Baltic Sea – began to supply the national power grid. This is a historic moment for the Polish energy sector. Baltic Power is entering one of the last phases of implementation. 54 of the 76 turbines have already been installed offshore, and construction is scheduled for completion this fall.
As Ireneusz Fąfara, president of ORLEN, emphasizes, the concern is implementing the largest investment program in the history of the Polish energy industry, for which it will allocate a total of up to PLN 380 billion. – Once again, we show the real effects of our actions. Work at sea started at the beginning of 2025, and the first electricity was connected to the network today, says President Fąfara. – This is the energy of tomorrow. Efficiently implemented ambitious investments that increase energy security and allow us to offer the lowest possible prices.
The president of the ORLEN Group points out that Baltic Power is an investment that will work for decades – it will not only provide energy and strengthen security, but also support the construction of a new sector of the Polish economy.
– At the same time, we are developing the national supply chain and competences that will remain in Poland long after the construction of this farm is completed. This is a value that is not measured only in megawatts, but also as a lasting impulse for the country’s development – adds president Ireneusz Fąfara.
Not only windmills
The construction of Baltic Power has now entered the so-called stage. First Power, which means starting energy production by the first turbine and starting the gradual commissioning of the farm. Then, subsequent turbines will be commissioned and tested. What is important is that the energy they produce will be fed into the national power grid, so Baltic Power is starting to power Poles’ homes. This is the first operation of this type carried out in Poland.
At the same time, the entire infrastructure is verified – from turbines and marine power stations, through the land power station, to control systems. As work progresses and subsequent turbines are launched, the farm’s power will gradually increase until it reaches the target of 1.2 GW.
The installation works are already over 80% completed. 54 turbines (out of the target 76) were placed in the Baltic Sea, all internal and export cables with a total length of 350 km were laid, and the installation of both marine power stations was completed. The entire land infrastructure is also ready, including the power station in the Choczewo commune. At the same time, there are several dozen specialized units operating in the investment area, carrying out assembly, testing and acceptance of subsequent elements of the farm.
Last year, the Baltic Power service base in Łeba started operating. At the current stage, it is supporting the construction, and after its completion, it will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the farm for approximately 30 years. There is also a Maritime Coordination Center there, which manages the movement of units working in the investment area. Over 100 ships and over 5.3 thousand crew members and contractors have been involved in the project so far.
Electricity to 1.5 million Polish homes
Ultimately, Baltic Power’s total capacity will be approximately 1.2 GW. The farm will have 76 turbines with a capacity of 15 MW each. The first Polish wind farm will generate approximately 4 TWh of electricity per year, which corresponds to approximately 3%. current national electricity demand. Electricity from Baltic Power will meet the needs of over 1.5 million households.
The wind farm itself, with an area of 130 square kilometers, is located approximately 23 km from the coast, near Choczewo and Łeba. It uses some of the largest and most advanced turbines in the world, which are equipped with nacelles manufactured in Poland. The energy generated by the Baltic Power farm will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 2.8 million tons per year compared to the production of energy from conventional sources.
Final preparations
In parallel with the commissioning work on the farm, further inspections and tests of infrastructure performance will be carried out. Baltic Power will obtain the required use permits and the certification process conducted by an independent auditor will be completed.
These are the first administrative proceedings of this type in Poland. After completion of construction, the last stage will be obtaining a license for electricity production issued by the Energy Regulatory Office. Baltic Power is currently the most advanced offshore wind project in Polish waters of the Baltic Sea.
