Paris 2024: Arkadiusz Kułynycz beats the world wrestling champion!
Looking at the seeding before the Olympic tournament, the Pole was not a favorite to compete with the Turk. Cengiz is the current world champion, and additionally number one in the seeding at the games, looking at the bracket of wrestlers in the 87 kg category. However, the Pole has a low world ranking due to the small number of starts, which could be a bit misleading. And Kulynych himself admitted that he was going to Paris with the goal of winning a medal.
As he said, so he started doing. Kulynych started with a 1:0 lead, but then he had to make up for the losses after a successful action by the Turk for 1:3. The decisive action turned out to be about three minutes before the end. Kulynych knocked down his opponent, showing off a spectacular throw for four points. This gave the victory, which the Pole took care of until the very end of the competition.
In the quarterfinals, Alireza Mohmadi, the vice-world champion from the non-Olympic category up to 82 kilograms, awaited the Pole. Unfortunately, the Iranian proved to be much stronger, ultimately winning 10:1 ahead of time.
The Polish Olympic team wins four medals in Paris
So far, Poland has four Olympic medals from the competition in the capital of France. The first to win the Olympic vice-championship was Klaudia Zwolińska, a whitewater kayaker. The bronze medal was then added by the Polish epee fencers, who snatched the team success by winning the match for 3rd place against the Chinese after a great fight.
The men responded to the women’s successes. The bronze medal was won by rowers, the Polish doubles team consisting of Dominik Czaja, Fabian Barański, Mirosław Ziętarski and Mateusz Biskup. On Friday, August 2, Iga Świątek added a bronze medal. She was the first in the history of the Polish Olympic movement to win an Olympic medal in tennis.
Poland also has a “virtual” medal, not yet included in the official record, but already certain – looking at the competition. We are talking about the success of boxer Julia Szeremeta. The Polish athlete found herself in the best four in the 57 kg category. And since there are no fights for bronze in boxing, the Polish competitor can already enjoy a place on the podium at the 2024 Olympics.
It is worth recalling that at the last summer games (Tokyo 2021), Poland won a total of 14 Olympic medals. This achievement consisted of: four gold, five silver and five bronze.
