A great record doesn’t last forever. Two blocks to be demolished
37 years ago, the Polish People’s Republic collapsed, and now the blocks of flats built then are collapsing. The infamous 10-story building from Kielce can no longer be saved. Just like a block of flats in Warsaw.
Times are changing, but the housing situation in Poland is not. Just like now, just after World War II, there was a shortage of apartments in Poland. Hope was placed in the large slab, because this technology allowed for quick, cheap and mass construction of buildings.
It is true that the authorities of the Polish People’s Republic in the 1970s made mass construction a social priority and gave many families a chance to advance in civilization and their own, relatively modern apartment with running water and heating. But some buildings clearly do not withstand the passage of time. They were designed to last 50 years.
Ursynów, built on clay, is falling apart. A design mistake from the 1980s.
The block belonging to the Warsaw housing cooperative “Imielin” was suddenly put out of use at the end of June 2026. In one of the staircases and apartments, there are huge gaps in the walls and floors, through which in some places you can stick your hand or look into neighboring rooms. However, construction supervision noticed a construction disaster.
However, initially, specialists assured that the rest of the building was safe and, above all, that there was no need to relocate people. Officials gave the cooperative 12 months to complete the required work in March.
In July 2026, over 40 families had to move out urgently because the condition of the building directly threatens life and health.
The cooperative has undertaken to cover the costs of accommodating evacuated people in hotels up to a 3-star standard until they are provided with alternative accommodation. The authorities of the Ursynów district also declared housing assistance from the city’s resources, stressing, however, that the legal obligation rests with the cooperative.
According to experts from the Institute of Building Technology (ITB), the main reason for the disaster is a construction error from the 1980s – the lack of the required expansion joint between the vertical parts of the building, which caused the building to press on itself and crack. The situation was made worse by difficult subsoil (loam) and uneven ground settlement.
The case of gross negligence on the part of the cooperative’s management, which delayed taking appropriate action, was investigated by the prosecutor’s office. According to residents, the problems began in 2009.
Kielce does not want a block with the Polish People’s Republic. 10 floors will crumble into dust and sand
A notorious social block in Kielce has been scheduled for demolition. For years, it was famous for numerous incidents, crimes and vandalism. The 10-story building has been unused for several years. This will probably be the first case in Poland of the demolition of a large block from the times of the Polish People’s Republic, unless Kielce overtakes Ursynów in Warsaw.
The authorities of Kielce announced an architectural competition to develop a concept for a new housing estate. A complex of multi-family buildings with a total area of over 5,000 is to be built there. m, underground garages with emergency shelter and service premises. There are over 100 apartments.
The premises are to be provided to people waiting for public housing, as well as to students and specialists needed on the local labor market.
