A great moment for the Pole at the US Open! She is the daughter of an Olympic medalist
Martyna Kubka, at the age of 25, will play in the qualifying rounds of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time. This will take place in New York during the US Open 2026.
We wrote about the success of the Polish tennis player in mid-July in WPROST. Martyna Kubka advanced to the top 200 of the WTA ranking for the first time in her career. This opens, among others: gateways to Grand Slam tournaments, if we’re talking about qualifiers.
The tennis player from Zielona Góra was one step away from making her debut at this level at this year’s Wimbledon. In London, it ultimately did not work out, the Pole ended up as the first “waiting” – but she had no chance of playing in the qualifying rounds. Thanks to her diligent work, the Polish representative (also in the Billie Jean King Cup) achieved her goal. And in New York, he no longer has to wait for a smile from fate, but has a certain place in the qualifying rounds for the US Open 2026.
Martyna Kubka will play in the US Open! Is the Polish woman’s debut a breakthrough in her career?
The Polish player came to NYC in 183rd position in the WTA ranking. Interestingly, Kubka achieved much more success in her career as a doubles player. However, singles offer much wider possibilities, and being from 2001 – i.e. Iga Świątek or Maja Chwalińska – you can still challenge yourself.
Kubka has taken several steps in the right direction over the last several months. Although the tennis player herself admitted that there were moments of great doubt as to whether it was really worth playing tennis professionally.
– I definitely had a few smaller ones. But I also had a bigger one. It was in 2022 when my Piotrek (coach Piotr Pawlak and private partner of the tennis player doc. eMPe) went to college. Well, I was left alone in Warsaw. The fact that he went to college wasn’t the main reason. Only he left. It just made me realize that I wasn’t the one dragging myself after all. If I didn’t have the other person next to me, I said: Damn, who am I really playing tennis for? Then I had a moment of reflection. I stopped playing for a month, as far as I remember. I took a break and didn’t know what to do next. Do I want to continue playing tennis, or maybe I want to go to college and not pursue this professional path? Graduate from a good university. Or maybe I don’t want to play tennis at all? It was a difficult moment, Kubka said in the Break Point podcast on YouTube.
Fortunately, Kubka has already put the worst behind him and is now going to make his next dreams come true. US Open qualifiers? The Pole’s opponent in the first round will be Annika Penickova. American, 16-year-old, who is number 569 on the world list. However, the hosts give chances to their talented representatives.
Interestingly, in private life, Kubka is the daughter of Olympians, Małgorzata Książkiewicz and Jacek Kubka. In both cases we are talking about shooting. The tennis player’s mother even won a bronze medal at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. However, my father was the bronze medalist of the European Championships (1991).
The main tournament of the US Open will begin on August 30. Certain players at this stage in New York are: Iga Świątek, Maja Chwalińska, Magdalena Fręch and Magda Linette. Among the men there are Hubert Hurkacz and Kamil Majchrzak. Katarzyna Kawa, Martyna Kubka, Linda Klimovicova and Maks Kaśnikowski – will start the three-stage qualifications on Monday (i.e. August 24).
Broadcasts from the US Open will be available on Eurosport channels and online, among others. on the HBO Max, Player and Polsat Sport Box platforms.
