After detecting the first case of diphtheria in Poland, the Chief Sanitary Inspectorate began an epidemiological investigation. Officials want to find out who had contact with a sick child.

The case of diphtheria revealed in Poland put numerous officials on the feet. It is already known that GIS will also inform EU institutions responsible for health protection in the community. This disease is treated extremely seriously in Europe.

It is already known that the sick 6-year-old has recently returned with his family from Africa. He was not vaccinated at the diphtheria, for which vaccinations in our country are mandatory. As immunity is lost with age, vaccination should be additionally renewed every 10 years. Especially before the exotic holidays.

Experts emphasize that diphtheria is a dangerous infectious disease that can be infected by coughing, sneezing or even just close contact with the patient. Therefore, the Chief Sanitary Inspectorate has already started extensive activities.

The services are now trying to find everyone who could have contact with an infected 6-year-old. It is both people who have contacted him on the plane, as well as those who saw the boy after returning to Poland. Currently, the 6-year-old is fighting for life in a hospital in Wrocław.

Information about the diploma of the diphtheria in an interview with TVN24 was confirmed by dr Janina Kulińska, spokeswoman for the Provincial Specialist Hospital J. Gromkowski in Wrocław. She noted that the facility had not met with this disease before. “Although she is a known disease, she has long been absent in the population due to the fact that it is covered by a vaccination calendar,” she explained.

Head of the Clinic of Pediatrics and Infectious Diseases of the University Clinical Hospital in Wrocław, prof. Leszek Szenborn added in an interview with PAP that “this child, although it was unvaccinated, stayed in Poland for six years and grew up among healthy people, but vaccinated”, however, “as soon as they were in other conditions, the situation changed”.
