Near the village of Margecany in Słowacki, the waters of Lake Ruzin are seriously polluted almost every year. And this time volunteers helped and decided to clean the reservoir.

The Ruzin artificial reservoir is located on the Hornad River in eastern Slovakia. From time to time, garbage from the entire area happens to flow there when the water level rises.

Slovakia. The unlucky reservoir is flooded with garbage again

This time, the volunteers were prepared and set up special barriers to prevent the waste from entering the lake. In this way, they prevented serious damage to nature. Unfortunately, the problem has still not been solved in the long term because there is no systemic way to prevent contamination of the tank.

As the Slovaks explain, Ruzin’s main purpose is to supply water to the industry. It also produces electricity and protects the area from floods. Unfortunately, it is not protected against garbage brought from the surrounding areas when the water level rises in the Hnilec and Hornad rivers.

80 tons of garbage in the lake. Activists had a lot of work to do

Officials estimate that this year, as much as 80 tons of garbage, mixed with tree branches and limbs, flowed into the lake. Volunteers associated with the Čisté brehy Ružín organization not only put up barriers, but also organized a clean-up campaign. The water services helped with this.

The waste was extracted for three whole days. Then they were transported for further segregation by the appropriate services. Interestingly, a positive change was noticed during the lake cleaning campaign. Well, less and less plastic waste is found in garbage. It is believed that this is the result of the deposit system introduced in 2022.
