50 euros behind the doormat and then cry. This is how tourists get tricked
You need to be careful not only during the high season when it comes to scammers lurking in front of travelers. This tactic looks particularly inconspicuous.
If you like traveling, you’ve probably heard about many thieves’ tricks. Sometimes they trick tourists into taking their wallets, electronic devices, or simply trick them into paying higher fees. The methods of operation of such people change regularly, and there are still many travelers unaware of the threat. This is what is a nightmare in Italy. Some people think it’s their lucky day, but when they realize what they’ve lost, it’s too late.
Watch out for this scam in Italy
Are you lucky to find money? If you see them carefully placed behind the windshield wiper of your car, you can be sure that it is not a coincidence or a lucky accident. While if you pick up a coin from the street while walking, you won’t be in any danger, but in the case of a car trick, you may be robbed.
Fraudsters in Italy work by deliberately placing a 50-euro banknote under the windshield wiper of tourists’ cars – it is fake, but it appears to be credible. Typically, drivers only notice the money when they are already in the car and leaving their personal belongings there. When a tourist goes outside to reach for banknotes, fraudsters step in – they steal things from the vehicle and look for valuable items. It also happens that they get into a running car and drive away.
Just because this tactic is currently making a lot of noise in Italian cities doesn’t mean you shouldn’t watch out for it in other countries as well. For example, the Spanish National Police warned against the same thing in the summer.
Not just banknotes behind the doormat
Another method used by fraudsters is, for example, placing a plastic bottle between a car wheel. This one causes noise when driving away, so the drivers get out to check what happened – then the same action as in the previous case begins.
An even more advanced fraud technique is to draw the side of the car or the rearview mirror and leave a note on the window with a message from the alleged perpetrator. In this case, the message asks you to fill out an insurance form by clicking on a specific link, and it turns out that in this way, criminals gain access to the driver’s personal data and passwords saved on the phone.
He advises people who encounter such situations not to stop or get out of the car. It is worth checking any cards or banknotes only after we have gone to a safe place.
