February 17 is World Cat Day. The Mars Petcare Foundation said it would not miss this opportunity to spread awareness about these wonderful animals.

Cat owners know well that individual cats differ greatly in character and personality. However, we will find some common features in these animals that are worth knowing.

5 interesting facts about cats

Let’s start with a cat’s whiskers, or whiskers. This is a very sensitive place on the cat’s body, supporting its sense of touch and allowing it to better navigate its surroundings. They enable not only orientation in space, but also distance assessment. They also support actions in situations of limited visibility. It is a perfect complement to the information collected using other senses.

Everyone knows that cats are great at hunting. They are silent, incredibly agile, fast and deadly to their targets. Few people know that they often improve their skills through innocent play. Even domestic cats, driven by instinct, practice reflexes and precision of movements while chasing toys.

– Responsible cat care includes not only proper diet, but also supporting its natural behavior, which contributes to the well-being and emotional balance of our pet. Cats are animals with a very strong hunting instinct, so it is important that playing with their owner fits into the hunting chain: hunting – eating – sleeping – explained Marzena Ignaczak, director of external relations at Mars Polska. After catching the toy, the cat should be given a meal, after which it can take a nap.

Cats see very well in the dark, which is also no surprise to anyone. “During this time, their pupils dilate significantly, letting in a lot of light, making it easier to notice the slightest movements around them. At the back of cats’ eyes there is a special layer of cells called the reflective membrane, which reflects light and is responsible for the characteristic, shiny glow of a cat’s gaze at night,” explains the Mars Foundation.

Extra cat sense

Not everyone knows that cats also have great hearing. They are able to perceive sounds up to two octaves higher than those that the human ear can register. This helps capture the squeaks of small rodents. The precision of their hearing is influenced by the structure of their ears. They contain as many as 32 muscles that allow the animal to move each ear independently. This helps to accurately locate the source of sound while remaining almost still and unnoticed by potential prey.

As if that wasn’t enough, cats have another additional sense. The so-called Jacobson’s organ is a combination of smell and taste, and allows you to receive pheromones containing specific information about the environment and other animals. When a cat uses this tool, it lifts its upper lip and wrinkles its nose.
